THE POWER OF WORDS: SOMETIMES PICTURES SAY IT BEST

October 21, 2024

When travelling the Pacific Coast Highway I had often imagined what it would be like to spend time camped in comfort on the beach, walking barefoot in the sand while watching and listening to the waves roll in. Last year I tried to make my dream a reality by registering with California State Parks and exploring our options. Sadly, I was told there was nothing available. They are usually fully booked, up to six months in advance. Still, my dream did not die.

Earlier this week when it became apparent we would be reaching San Diego earlier than planned, we thought about places we might stay until our campsite at Mission Bay RV Resort is available. I recalled how captivated we had been by Silver Strand State Park in Coronado. I had even done some investigation into what would be involved in securing a spot there in the future, no matter how unlikely the possibility.

I thought we might as well try our luck this year, despite it being a long shot. On Thursday I phoned to see if anything might be available for Sunday and Monday night. To our great surprise and delight, we were able to secure a spot. Moreover, our site is directly alongside the beach, with only sand separating us from the ocean. I immediately thought of my teenage grandson Carson, who so enjoyed the oceanside when he was a toddler. We would love to share this experience with him, and so many others.

San Diego sunsets are always a thing of beauty. Capturing last night’s reflection on the water was the perfect way to end the day.
