Guest Blogger Donna Morse – In Berlin
In the past month, I traveled to Berlin, Germany and only had 24 hours to view some sites of the city. First impression of Berlin was that it was dirty with graffiti everywhere! But, if one can get beyond those first impressions, you will find Berlin an extremely interesting and historical destination.
Even being on my own, I found walking around the main tourist destinations to be very safe. Tiergarten Park, Column of Peace, Branenburg Gate, and the Berlin Wall are places you should not miss. Adjacent to the large portion of the Berlin Wall is the Topography of Terror Museum. The Museum opened in 2010 and is situated on the site of the WWII SS and Gestapo Headquarters. The Museum is free and is a pictorial history of the Nazi regime to the end of WWII and the trials following the war. Definitely worthwhile to visit.
Also, another sombre place to visit is the Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe which is approximately two blocks from Brandenberg Gate. Easy to catch a Hop on Hop off bus at Brandenberg Gate but make certain you ask for a discount on the advertised price.
Berlin is a very interesting place to visit, even for a short period of time. The people are friendly and helpful. Enjoy!
